The hospitals have the basic needs to attend to basic medical emergencies. The hospitals are considered much more basic than compared to European standards. Tourists can receive free medical treatment at the hospital when you present your passport. However it is essential to have health insurance that covers repatriation when going to the Cape Verde Islands. There are private doctors in Cape Verde however they will usually expect cash payment whether or not you have insurance.

Before travelling

Before travelling it is a good idea to stock up on medication that you might need before entering the country. If you are taking specific prescription medication it is a good idea to have a letter from your doctor stating you are carry a particular medicine.

Vaccination

There are no specific injections that you must have when visiting Cape Verde, however if you would prefer to err on the side of caution, your doctor may advise you to have a vaccination against Typhoid, Diphtheria-Tetanus and Hepatitis A. While these things are not necessary, they might help you have an illness free holiday.
